da pinup bet: According to reports Spurs have had an £11.5m bid accepted for Toby Alderweireld, much to the annoyance and outrage of Southampton, who may issue legal action if Spurs complete the signing of the Belgian.
da betsson: The reason for the possible legal action from the Saints has come from a buy-out agreement written into Alderweireld’s loan deal last season that Atletico Madrid failed to cancel.
The clause was just £6.8m, a small fee for a player of Alderweireld’s ability and potential. It is thought that the Madrid-based club could have opted out of the agreement if they paid the Saints a £1.5m fee, but they did not do so in time.
So getting a deal done for Spurs could be quite problematic, considering the legal threat from the Saints if Alderweireld was to sign for anyone else.
But then again, the fact that the Belgium international is so keenly sought after does indeed say a lot. The interest is big, not because he is a cheap signing, but as the 26-year-old is a quality centre back, at a good age along with good experience.
It is fair to say that Atletico would not be so keen on moving Alderweireld on if they had not discovered a new, younger centre-back in Jose Gimenez – who does look like a real prospect at just 20-years-of-age.
And it is Spurs’ desperate need of a good quality centre-back that means that a deal for Alderweireld is now of huge importance for the London-based club. Tottenham have struggled to form a truly reliable centre-back partnership for a few years, and the recent signings of Vlad Chiriches and Federico Fazio have not worked out – neither have looked up to scratch to play week in, week out in the Premier League and form a proper relationship with Jan Vertonghen.
Alderweireld could well be the perfect partner for Vertonghen. The pair are, of course, Belgian and have regularly represented their country together and have formed a centre back partnership at the heart of the defence, or have at least played together in the back four on other occasions when Alderweireld was played in a full-back position or when Vertonghen was deployed wide, too.
That is another positive, too, Alderweireld can play a number of positions. He can play at full-back, centre-back or even in defensive midfield where he filled in well last season for the Saints on occasion. His versatility is impressive along with his age – he is only 26 and has good experience, meaning Spurs would be signing a player who has many years at the top in him yet.
Despite being just 26, he has already won 47 international caps and has already proven he is a good Premier League performer in his first season. He will surely only improve in his second Premier League campaign, so there are many positives to completing a deal for Alderweireld.
Getting a deal done could be very important for Spurs as the Belgian would fill a vital position and strengthen Mauricio Pochettino’s side in a key area, which is something that needs to be done to close the gap on the top four.
