da pinnacle: Alvaro Morata is a player Arsenal fans will be very aware of. The 22-year-old Spaniard has been linked with the Gunners for some time, and it appears that he could make the long-awaited switch this summer… if £60m is stumped up! Okay, he’s probably not worth more than Angel di Maria just yet, but Morata could be a wise addition for the London side in the long run for a more reasonable fee, with the club still not having solved their desire to land a top class centre-forward.
da heads bet: So, could the Juventus ace make the difference between the title and a fourth place surge for Arsenal? Maybe, and here are FIVE reasons why…
Welbz’s struggles
Danny Welbeck’s addition last summer smelt a little of a panic buy. The England international was parachuted in as the deadline approached when it became clear that Olivier Giroud would miss the majority of the end of 2014. Initially it looked like a good deal, though, with ‘Welbz’ playing through the centre, making use of his pace and even dispelling the myth that he cannot finish.
However, things have turned a little sour in more recent times, with the goals having dried up and a wing role having been frequented more often than not. Welbeck still has time on his side, but it’s looking increasingly likely that he won’t be the success many hoped he would be.
Still young
At 22, Morata really is at the very start of what could be a promising career. The youngster has already represented Spain at senior level and has played for two of the biggest sides on the planet – Real Madrid and Juventus – showing that he certainly has a bit about him at such a tender age. Wenger is known for his ability to nurture young talent, so the Frenchman could yet polish another gem in the shape of Morata.
Knows where the goal is
Even though he’s still young, Morata has a proven record in front of goal. He may not boast mind-blowing numbers in terms of goals, but the 22-year-old has certainly got enough in the way of stats going for him to suggest that he knows how to put the ball in the net – especially considering that he played a bit part role at Real.
He already has nine to his name for Juve this season, Coppa Italian included, so his confidence is also high.
Proven at the highest leveln
Despite his age, Morata has already won more than many of Arsenal’s more experienced players, including honours such as La Liga, the Champions League and the UEFA U-21 European Championship. He player a rather reserved role in the first two, but his presence and minutes on the pitch are sure to have bred a winning mentality into the forward already, which bodes well for his future.
Keep him from a rival such as Liverpool
Not the most sustainable model, but hoovering up some talent ahead of a top four rival could make sense. Liverpool are also believed to be keen on Morata, and with the Reds one of the cluster of teams in direct competition with the Gunners year in, year out, allowing them to strengthen significantly is a worry. The Londoners acted on that last summer to land Alexis Sanchez, which has proven to be wise so far.
