Wolves lost out at White Hart Lane to three late goals on Saturday and McCarthy is now hoping the manner of the performance brings an end to the criticism of his side.
"My team are not a dirty side and never have been," he told the club's official website.
"I can't change that perception about from to keep playing the way we do and compete, pass the ball and play fairly.
"We play good football and we did that at Tottenham.
"We seem to be the bad guys at the moment and we're not but we're being portrayed like that.
"Some of the media storm has been a disgrace.
"There was a tough old game at our place against Newcastle where there was no quarter given or asked and no manager complained.
"From there we were portrayed as the bad boys and I find it very distasteful what other people have made of it.
"I feel we've been let down a little bit by some people who've tried to use it against us.
