da brdice: According to the Daily Mirror, Aston Villa are keen on signing free-agent Robert Huth after John Terry agreed a deal to sign for Russian side Spartak Moscow, putting any rumours of him re-joining Steve Bruce’s side to bed.
What’s the story?
da wazamba: Terry joined Aston Villa on a one-year deal last season after spending 17 years with Chelsea, where he won five Premier League titles, four FA Cups, three League Cups, a Europa League title and the Champions League.
The now 37-year-old helped Villa to reach the playoff final, but the Birmingham-based side lost 1-0 to Fulham and were in huge financial trouble having missed out on the riches of the Premier League. Terry left as the club struggled under the threat of a winding up order from HMRC.
However, billionaires Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris bought a controlling stake from Dr Tony Xia and started putting money into the club over the summer, allowing boss Steve Bruce to make a number of signings.
Defensively short
Bruce ended up signing seven players during the summer window but he failed to bring in a centre-back and even sanctioned the loan of Tommy Elphick to Hull, despite the club having just James Chester and on loan Axel Tuanzebe as recognised central defenders.
So far this season, Bruce has been persisting with a partnership of Chester and defensive midfielder Mile Jedinak at the back but Villa have conceded a worrying 11 goals in just six league games and sit 12th in the Championship.
After missing out on Terry, Huth would seem to be the best option as an emergency signing after the 34-year-old left Leicester in the summer. Huth is a three-time Premier League winner and has plenty of experience that Villa could use after their difficult start to the season.
