da brdice: So much has been written about Fabio Capello and the general consensus of the English media and Joe Public is that he is a hapless case and not deserving of the job to lead our nation to any form glory. The country’s view is an indictment of why we always, and will continue to, fail on the world stage.
da winzada777: I am not going to sit here and defend England’s performance in the World Cup; it was seriously shocking, but is it simply down to the manager? Key players failed to perform and were happy to take a back seat behind the manager as the flak started flying, but that is the general mentality of modern players these days rather than to look to resolve the problem on the pitch. Football managers’ futures unfortunately are dictated by the players and whether they like you or not.
Fabio Capello has been getting an increasing amount of stick for his decision to reinstate John Terry as captain. The media have been feasting on it and doing everything they can to unsettle the England camp (their favourite past time). While I accept that the handling of the decision could have been better, doesn’t Capello deserve a pat on the back for making such a bold decision? We have all bitched and moaned about England’s performance in the World Cup so Capello has decided to do something about it and reinstate the man who would have been his captain in South Africa, had the spineless FA and the media not put untold pressure on him to strip him of that honour. Where did the leadership of Ferdinand and Gerrard get England in South Africa – surely a change was needed?

Capello has made a bold call in going against the grain here, but then again he does know what it takes to succeed at the top. We as a nation don’t know what success actually is and that is the real problem. England invented the game and brought it to the masses but we have been overtaken in every level of it, from grassroots right through to the national team – something we need to acknowledge if we are ever going to address the problems of our national failings. Love or loathe Capello he is the most decorated England manager we have ever had who has achieved everything he can as a club manager and we should be tapping into his knowledge and knowhow, asking him as to where we are going wrong and allowing him the time to get the country moving in the right direction.
Capello has won 8 titles as a manager (4 with different clubs) and the Champions League, but instead there is a real national clamour for Harry Redknapp to move in as England manager, whose only honour in management is an FA Cup with Portsmouth and yet we think he is the best qualified for the role to move our national team forward. It is an absolute joke and it’s this attitude that underlines why we as a nation will continue to fail.
Capello may not have the greatest communication skills, or address the media in the right vein, but he has a bigger trophy cabinet than any other England manager that went before him so he must know something about the game and what is needed to succeed. The nation’s constant barracking of the man from all quarters has done little but destroy any chance we had as a nation of getting back to the top of the game. I reiterate the point that if a manager of Capello’s knowledge or tactical knowhow can’t get England performing, then what chance have the Redknapp’s of this world got?
