This season saw second season syndrome hit the lions meaning a relegation dog-fight for this season. Despite positives such as the progression of James Henry and signing of Shane Lowry, if a higher finish is going to come out of the upcoming campaign, certain aspects need to be improved.
The away form was great as far as the Lions were concerned, with great away wins including Peterborough and Leicester, but the home form has been a disaster.
It took until April 7, a two nil win over Hull City, for the Lions to secure a league win at home in 2012. This will have to improved for Millwall to move higher in the table, don’t under-perform at the Lions Den, otherwise you’ll know how bad it was by the ‘wall faithful.
With wins come confidence, but confidence was a missing component and a reason of the poor home form. The Lions were putting in proud performances, e.g. Southampton at home, but two penalties in five minutes left defeat and shattered confidence for the players. The hosts would play and pass the ball around well until the final third, then usually collapse under pressure to create chances. But a slight improvement came in the final month of the season as they were not afraid to attack to upcoming defence.
Another improvement would be the fullbacks, no one is denying that they are committed, but for Championship standard I would say only two ( Jack Smith at RB, Tony Craig as covering CB) are good enough.
The players at KJ’s disposal are committed enough players, but they are just so easy to play against, teams target our fullbacks as weaknesses, if anyone remembers Scott Barron against Brighton at the Den you’ll see how. There is no hiding from the fact that the defence will have to be improved over the summer, especially in the left back position where a number of possible targets have already been identified.
This improvement will have to come from Kenny Jackett himself, the timing of second half substitutions. Time after time subs are either brought on too late, or the wrong sought of player is thrown on. Remembering the first game of the season, two nil up at Reading with the Royals looking vulnerable and Millwall more then capable of getting a 3rd, Jackett brings on Scott Barron for Bouazza, cue the onslaught of Reading attack and a two all draw.
Even at home it happens, Liam Feeney came on looking to bolster the Lions attack against Southampton, but just after Rickie Lambert scored to make it 3-2 in the 90th minute, pointless. Their is no point leaving the subs until late unless they’re a Neil Harris-esq type of poacher in front of goal, they have to be able to change the game!
These factors will hopefully improve to see the Lions push up the table, and I’m still a firm believer that Kenny Jackett is the man to do it.
In Kenny We trust.
