There is no doubting the fact that Arsenal have the spending power to make a number of world-class additions this summer. If Wenger is serious about challenging for the Premier League title, he will have to buy a group of big name players at some point. If Arsenal do spend big in the summer, there is enough potential for Arsenal to really compete for the Premier League’s elite.
Here are five world-class signings that will have Arsenal fans dreaming of Premier League glory once again…
Edinson Cavani
A player that seems to be constantly linked to Arsenal at the moment, Edinson Cavani is currently one of the best strikers on the planet. Although it has not worked out brilliantly for the Uruguayan at Paris Saint Germain, where he has often been played out of position to accommodate Zlatan Ibrahimovic, there is no doubting the striker’s ability.
At 27-years-old, Cavani is entering the prime stages of his career and it would have to take a bid of around £55 million in order for Arsenal to capture him.
His excellent pace and finishing ability seem like the perfect fit alongside a creative Arsenal midfield and there is no doubt that he would be the main striker at the Emirates. He is a signing that would bring a lot of goals to the club, allowing him to excel in his favoured position.
Mats Hummels
Although Borussia Dortmund have been struggling in the Bundesliga this season, Mats Hummels still remains a world class talent. The German centre-back was absolutely colossal in the summer and confirmed his status as one of the best defenders in world football. Dortmund face the very real prospect of not playing in the Champions League next season and this could cause Hummels to re-evaluate his options at the end of the current campaign.
If Arsenal were to move for Hummels, they will face a lot of competition from some of Europe’s biggest clubs. It is no secret that Manchester United are interested in signing the 26-year-old but rumours suggest that the £30 million pound man could prefer a move to Arsenal. The defender would add unrivalled quality to the back four and a potential German partnership with current Arsenal man Per Mertesacker could sway Hummels’ decision.
Morgan Schneiderlin
One of the stand-out Premier League stars of the season, it is almost a forgone conclusion that Schneiderlin will leave Southampton in the summer, regardless of how well the Saints do in the league.
Arsenal fans have been crying out for a defensive midfielder for a while now and there is no doubt that 25-year-old fits the bill. He is excellent at breaking down play but he is also technically astute, something that will appeal to Arsene Wenger.
A bid of around £25 million would represent money well spent on a proven Premier League performer that is desperate to take his career to the next level. The Frenchman seems like he could be an excellent fit at the Emirates and it would provide Arsenal with the solidarity they need in the middle of the park.
Petr Cech
Although David Ospina has impressed since he replaced Wojciech Szczesny in goal for the Gunners, there is no doubting the talent of Petr Cech. Although he claims he is happy to fight for his place at Chelsea, it looks as though Thibaut Courtois will be Chelsea’s number one for many years to come.
The 32-year-old is still one of the league’s best glovesmen and his addition would add solidarity and command to a back four that has struggled at times this season. His Chelsea contract runs until 2016 so it would not take a huge bid from Arsenal to lure him away from Stamford Bridge.
One of the biggest stumbling blocks could be Jose Mourinho, who will be reluctant to let a goalkeeper of Cech’s class join a Premier League rival. However, Wenger should certainly try to sign the Champions League winner as Arsenal have often struggled to find stability in the goal, a problem that has become all too familiar for Arsenal in recent seasons.
Sergio Ramos
The Spanish defender has enjoyed heaps of success in his time at Real Madrid but recent reports have suggested that the World Cup winner wants to leave the Bernabeau. There are rumours that he has gone so far as to reject a new contract offer from the club so Arsenal should move fast if they want to secure what would be a huge transfer coup.
Ramos would bring leadership and a presence at the back that not many defenders in world football can match. He is also a real threat from set pieces and has built a reputation of being a goalscoring defender with his memorable Champions League final header providing the catalyst for Real to go on and win the tournament.
Still only 28-years-old, he will be another player that many clubs will want to sign. However, Sergio Ramos has never hidden his desire to play in the Premier League so if there ever was the ideal time to move for the defender, it would be now.
