da brwin: Manchester United were able to leapfrog Arsenal into fifth place after they beat Leicester City 1-0 at the King Power over the weekend.
da dobrowin: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side now sit just two points behind Chelsea in the race for Champions League football, though the Norwegian’s Manchester City counterpart Pep Guardiola thinks they could yet go a step further than just finishing in the top four and win the Premier League title.
The Breakdown
“I never said Tottenham was not there, nor Chelsea,” Guardiola was quoted saying by Sky Sports when speaking about the title challengers of this season.
“I never put out all five-six teams, and United is making this run of victories every single week, they’ll be there to fight for the Premier League. If Chelsea is able to do games in a row, games in row, they’ll be contenders too to win the Premier League, so everybody is there. The gap is not too big.”
In some sense, you can understand where Guardiola might be coming from with so much more points still to play for.
But even so, it still does feel like too little too late. While you cannot put it past Manchester United winning close to maximum points from now until the end of the season considering the form they are in, the same would have to go for both Liverpool and Manchester City, making recovering that 14-point gap seem almost impossible.
With the right manager, which could be Solskjaer and, a couple of defensive signings, Manchester United should be right in the mix in the next campaign. But as for now, an assault on the title looks like a challenge too far.
