da pixbet: Per a report from The Sun, Aston Villa are ready to launch a huge bid for Stoke ‘keeper Jack Butland this week.
What’s the word?
In recent weeks it appears as though a key area Villa are trying to improve in is between the sticks. That’s despite the form Jed Steer showed in the final quarter of the season.
Last week the Villans had a bid knocked back for Neil Etheridge whilst journalist Alan Nixon has claimed the club are now in the market for a goalkeeper from abroad.
However, recent developments have shown that Dean Smith’s men now have an interest in Butland.
The England international took a step down to the Championship last term after being relegated with the Potters but he could be about to return. The Sun claim that Villa could launch a £20m bid for the stopper this week.
Goalkeeper hoodoo put to rest
It seems incredibly questionable that Villa are looking for a new goalkeeper. After returning from a loan spell with Charlton, Steer showed that he’s more than got what it takes to be Villa’s main man in goal.
His penalty shoot-out heroics in the play-offs is all the evidence you need.
Villa fans themselves have expressed concerns about a new goalkeeper arriving, particularly after three came through the doors last season.
Orjan Nyland joined permanently during the 2018 summer window whilst Andre Moreira also signed on loan.
Both moves didn’t go to plan whilst the same can be said for Lovre Kalinic, who spent a period out injured following his signing in January.
Recent history suggests that the club doesn’t have too much luck when it comes to bringing in ‘keepers, but Butland could put an end to that.
The 26-year-old is proven in the Premier League and as the club bid to stay up next season, a player like that in goal could be crucial.
That being said, it would be foolish if the club were to write Steer off completely ahead of the new term.
